Project introduction
Tehran, the capital of Iran, first started constructing a metro system in 70’s,
but due to financial problems the first mass transit line did not open until
March 1999. Line 5 of the Tehran metro began operating in 1999 and was Iran's
first metro system. From 2000 onwards, commercial operation began on Lines 1 and
2. Construction of these lines and extension of Line 2, started in February
2000. Since then, the metro system has been gradually expanding by adding more
urban lines
The -east to west- line 2 meets –north to south- line 1 in “Imam Khomeini
Station”. The first phase operated in August 2001, as for the second phase,
from ”Darvazeh Dowlat Station” to “Mirdamad Station” (7 km, 8 stations) began
its operation in March 2002. Another 5 km stretch was added in Oct 2002 during
extension. This line was then extended towards the south to ”Haram Imam”, the
former branch from ”Shahed” to ”Shahr-e Aftab” was also extended in 2017 to the
Imam Khomeyni International Airport. The 31 km line of the airport station is
part of line 1 and is expected to be expanded to “Shahr-e Jadid-e Parand” in
Tehran (approx. 18 km).
